General description of a Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS)
In the simplest sense, a recirculating aquaculture
system consists of a unit for the culture of organisms and a unit for water
treatment. These two units are connected by the water flow, which is created by
a pump. The integrated water treatment continuously adapts the water quality to
the requirements of the culture organisms and thus the water can be reused.
A recirculating aquaculture system usually consists of different components such as tanks & basins, a mechanical, biological and chemical filtration as well as a sump tank and a pump. In addition, recirculating aquaculture systems contain aeration units and units for pH adjustment as well as various measurement and control technology.
